I keep getting the virtual memory minimum too low message every time I shut down. I check my processes with cntl-alt-del and saw that I had enough memory each time i shut down.
I also set my paging file to "0" for both min and max and partitiioned my HD and set it at 768MB min and max. But the problem still persists.
So, I upped it to 900 MB and the problem has decreased enormously. Once in a while it'll display the message again.
I checked my memory through process and made sure that everything was well within my memory's limits. I also reformateted my HD and reinstalled everything. Only to have the same problem.
This is really weird.
Has anyone experienced this problem?
My system is a Gateway laptop 9550SE with
1Gig cpu,
256MB ram
20 gig HD c: is NTSC patition
Windows XP pro
Nvidia 32 MB
Office XP
No Kazza or morpheus

Thanks

I had the problem once, but running chkdsk seemed to fix it. No idea what caused it.

It happened to me. No matter what size I made the page file, it would give me that error. I kept trying, and finally it accepted one of the values I had (slightly more than the min). Maybe your computer is inefficiently using the memory?

I've got the same problem and it just started happening a couple of days ago. When did this start for all of you? I also recently uploaded some updates for XP home from Microsoft.

I'm wondering if the updates caused this problem?

I found a thread on a Microsoft Newsgroup that's interesting. All the people reporting this error there are either using Norton Internet Security or Norton Personal Firewall.

Is anyone here NOT using one of these Norton products and getting the error?

I too have started getting this error over the last month or so, I am using Win XP Pro and NIS 2002, previous to this I had no problems running NIS 2002 on XP, I have sent a mail to Norton Tech support to see what they have to say.

This is the reply from Symantec:
This situation is usually caused by a timing conflict between software
programs on your computer. You can find more information, as well as a
questionnaire you can fill out in the following document:

Title: 'Error: "Your system is low on virtual memory. Windows is
increasing the size of your virtual memory paging file."'
Please note that this situation is not " prevalent now for everyone
using XP and NIS 2002". This situation is relegated to a very small
number of specific computers, and is very rare.

If we can be of further assistance in regards to Norton Internet
Security, please let us know.

Hmmm, perhaps if you all send a bug report it may not be so "rare" and maybe they will then fix it instead of providing a work around.

It is not very rare. I've seen it posted on the Delltalk forums quite a bit. Anyone else having this problem on a Dell?

Yet another reply from symantec:

There can be innumerable reasons that timing conflicts can arise on
your computer. Many of these, but not all involve installing, changing
or removing any software, hardware drivers, or anything else on your
computer. As there are thousands upon thousands of different software
programs, and as many hard drive configurations, it is nearly
impossible to predict when or why a timing conflict occurs.

>Why if it is so rare is there a discussion forum on this topic
>alone.???

I am unsure of what you speak in this instance. This discussion group
is relegated to the Norton Internet Security Professional Edition
software installed on the Windows XP operating system. There is no
discussion group specific to the issue you are experiencing.

If you are dissatisfied with our product, you are well within your
rights to change your mind. The web-page listed below outlines the

Well, I tried Norton's "fix" where you have NIS load from Startup rather than the boot process, and it didn't work. However, the "workaround" does work, where you disable NIS then restart or shutdown. Is anyone else out there in my boat?

Symantec resolved the "low virtual memory" problem with Norton Internet Security at shutdown of win-xp. see: http://service4.symantec.com/SUPPORT/nip.nsf/pfdocs/2002032012013236
