A couple days ago I posted an XP question in the Vista forum by accident. Someone replied though, but when I went back on to relay the info to someone, it was not there! So please do not take this post off.

When is the year that MS is going to stop releasing updates to win XP users?

Thanks

The timelines for Professional & home are below.

The timeline for WinXP home will no doubt extended due to recent decisions by MSoft to continue selling WinXP home to OEM that build low end laptops.

2 years for WinXP home sales on budget laptops. MSoft hasn't stated what the support for those laptops will be but I am guessing they will need to provide critical updates at the least. Probably IE updates too.

At any rate it is too early to worry about it right now. Windows 7 should be out before that.

Good, and I hope that it will be better than vista.

And I hope that they don't charge us ridicules amounts of money for it either, we are at their mercy when it comes to that.

MSoft is moving toward an alacarte modular OS where you will buy the modules you need.

This will undoubtedly cost more. Maybe by then Linux will be ready for prime time.

Modular huh? So we will buy a base and get the extra components we need.

Yep - You pay for each modular you use on a monthly basis. This is also known as SaaS (Software as a Service) subscription.

On a monthly basis??? That sounds........odd.

How necessary will the add-ons be?

Look Windows 7 is several years away and M$ has revealed nothing constructive yet. Why worry about it now? Just enjoy what you have.

I know, I'm just curios. I just needed to make sure that I will still get XP updates until then.

Don't worry about updates. There are Win98 systems that have run fine for many years without any updates. I haven't downloaded any XP updates since SP2.

I know, I don't trust some of those updates either.

"I don't trust some of those updates either."

Every time I apply a Windows update, I consider it a gamble. Luckily, most times, the gamble pays off, although the odds are not good enough for me to trust automatic updates. I need to know what was updated, and when.

Please let us know if you found someone's advice to be helpful.

I do the same, turn off auto updates and see what it is going to install before it actually does it.
