Hi, I just installed a ligitimate windows xp professional on my desktop, however as long as I launch Windows Update, I am always directed to www.msn.com web page without getting any update. It never happened before. I have no idea of what is wrong. If I directly go to microsoft web site trying to manually download windows xp service pack2, the page won't be displayed. Any suggestion and help would be highly appreciated!

Is the legal copy you installed an OEM version or a full version?
Your connection to the internet and to the Microsoft site work fine otherwise?
What version of Internet Explorer is running on the computer?

Try to start the Internet Explorer manually, go to Extras and start the Windows Update.

There could be something wrong with the MSoft site.
Try this distributable version site. Type WinXP SP2 into the search box. SP3 is on the home page.

So there are several thing to check. 1. check c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts 2. in a dos box, run arp -d ipconfig /flushdns
Try the update again and report back.

Ah, you may also try to use another DNS server. Maybe the DNS server of your ISP provides wrong informations.

A long shot: Bring up the 'Adjust Date\Time' window. Change the date and time to something else. Reboot, and go back and set it to the correct date/Time.

I know about that, but I made a mistake. The hand was faster than the eye :-)
Sorry.
