Comment:

I'm having some really irritating problems with Windows XP.

First off, I get this message while im logged in as the Administrator:
"Windows File Protection
Files that are required for Windows to run properly have been replaced by unrecognized versions. To maintain system stability, Windows must restore the original versions of these files. Insert your Windows XP SP1 CD in your CD-ROM drive now."

And I insert the CD...Spins up for a while... I never had this message before. Just these last two weeks I have been getting it time and time again. Very annoying.

Next, sometimes when I turn my PC off, it will not boot back up. Simply hang at Mup.sys.

Third, Internet Explorer has suddenly become very unstable.

Fourth, my whole computer in general is going MUCH slower. Sometimes it will simply not do what I say. eg. If i want IE to open, it won't. It I want a folder to open it won't etc... (Not quite a crash, just non-responsive)

Fifth, it seems to crash a lot more (besides from what was mentioned just above)
I have a record of this computer not crashing for about 7 months, now it crashes every other day.

It seems to be a lot more stable when I use a limited account. (Which is what I'm on right now)

Actually, most of these problems do not appear while I'm on a limited account. But I need to be able to use my Admin account.

And I have a strong suspicion that It has to do with one of the Windows Updates, because it all started after I installed a more recent windows update.

I'd like this to end... It's driving me nuts!

Oh and I have reformatted and reinstalled like four times.

I'm at the windowsupdate website now about to update my comp, but none of the critical updates go by the name "Q311967". And I can't find the correct one to disable.

And I'm not sure that Q311967 is the right one. I already have SP1, and Q311967 was released on 4/2/2002 almost two years ago. AndōX‹¸aven't been having this problem since then.

Well I did my 5th reinstall seeing as XP became unusable again.

Now it seems OK, but i'm still getting the message to enter the XP CD because there are some files with unrecognized versions.

No sign of Q311967 on windowsupdate.microsoft.com or in the add/remove programs.

Back to square one. Any ideas?

. Put the Windows XP CD to the CD-ROM.
2. Click Exit if the auto-menu pops up.
3. Click Start, and click Run.
4. Type "SFC /Scannow" (without quotation marks) in the Open box, and click OK.
5. Restart the computer and check if this issue can be resolved.

note the space between sfc and /
