Specs: Windows XP
I am the sole user on my computer. I was logged in with Administrator rights. When uninstalling a program no longer required my internet explorer crashed and at the same time I lost nearly all my icons on my desktop. Just the basic icons remained. IE reinstalled itself and then XP did in involuntary update. I rebooted and was told that the user profile could not be found. Now I cannot access My Documents, and files for my databases are not present. I know they are still on my computer but I cannot get my profile back. Please help me as I have a spent a ot of time and effort on this. I cannot even enter my backups!

Slave your HD to another HD/comp ( no need to bolt it in, just cable it & leave it outside the case ) & copy your stuff ( don't forget your emails & address book ) onto the other HD or other media.
You may have a choice of jumper settings on the master HD, such as master with slave or ms.

Now put it back in your comp, once again, no need to bolt it in at this stage ( change the jumper, back to where it was )

Here are some rescue programs.

PLoP Linux

Thanks for your reply and information. I'll try this. I have managed to rebuild my databases so there's no real harm done. In fact, at the moment, my computer is working a little better than before. Recently I had a new motherboard put in and this seems to have affected the stability. Anyway, I'm grateful for your advice. Best Roger
