Comment: I'm working on a Toshiba Satelite Laptop, that has gotten infected. Windows XP Starts, but within a few seconds the whole desktop and any programs that were open, shut down. Everything disappears off the desktop (except the wallpaper) then reappears after a few seconds. I followed the instructions on copying the SAM, SECURITY, SOFTWARE, SYSTEM, and DEFAULT to *.bak files. Deleting them, and replacing them with the ones in the Repair folder. That fixed the problem, untill I went to start some of the programs that were apparently installed after the repair files were made. When I try to install them from the Toshiba CD (or any of the other software) I recieve a "RPC Server unavailable" error. Not sure which problem will be easier to deal with. Can anyone shed some light? I have both sets of 5 files backed up to individual tmp folders so I could choose which problem to tackle.

Reply: (edit) I followed the instructions on copying the SAM, SECURITY, SOFTWARE, SYSTEM, and DEFAULT to *.bak files What instructions? If you meant this it won't work because Toshiba Satellite is known to have OEM Windows preinstalled and you were warned not to use the procedure that is described in this article. i_Xp/VistaUser

Reply: (edit)That is the procedure. But I am able to get back into Recovery Console. I just use my Windows XP CD I have for another computer to start up in Recovery Console. The Toshiba CD automatically wants to start from a clean slate. Any more info on this?

Reply: (edit)Was the instructions you followed the same one I linked in Post 1 above? If so, it stated the followings: Warning Do not use the procedure that is described in this article if your computer has an OEM-installed operating system. The system hive on OEM installations creates passwords and user accounts that did not exist previously. If you use the procedure that is described in this article, you may not be able to log back into the recovery console to restore the original registry hives. i_Xp/VistaUser

Reply: (edit)Yes it was the one you linked. But I am able to log back in Recovery Console. I Reversed the procedure. So now I'm back to the disappearing desktop and programs problem. All the programs start, but shut down once the disappearing act starts.
