Specs: Windows XP home
System Restore turns off all the time, I go in and turn it on but it won't stay on. Not that I use it, but I like it be there.

Start > Run > Services.msc > ok
Maximize the Services Windows that will open
Scroll down to "System Restore Service" and double click on it
Confirm "Startup Type" is set to "Automatic"
Apply > ok (if any changes were made)
Then close Services Window

Failing that read further here:

Note: you must have Administrator privileges on your User account
Confirm this by Start > Run > control nusrmgr.cpl > ok

I hope this helps :)

I did as suggested and found it was set to automatic, re-checked system restore and found it had been saving restore points for a week! Don't know why the change but will know what to check in the future. Glad to have found your helpful site, I'm female and 70 and have learned a lot since 1992 when I first started. My computer is important to me and mistakes do happen... thankyou!

Clear & Reset System Restore's Cache

Go to Start >> Run - type or copy/paste: control sysdm.cpl,,4 and then press Enter
* Tick on the checkbox - Turn off System Restore on all drives
* Click Apply
Turn it back 'On' by unticking the same checkbox & click Apply, and then OK

Also download and Run CCleaner to remove all not required temp files
