This is a follow-up to another post whereby I believe my Windows XP was lagging upon start-up. I originally thought it was my scanner, but found that not to be the problem when I unplugged it.

Here's what happening -

When Windows XP loads I get my login screen, if I type my password and Windows XP continues to load I get the Start button and everything else looks great. Windows is still doing something behind the scenes though because whenever I try to access a system function (e.g., control panel/system or connect to internet) it just locks up and waits for about 2 minutes before doing anything.

Eventually everything works.

I thought it was my scanner initialization until I tried the following. When I get the Windows login screen I just let it sit there. After two minutes it does its thing and everything loads fine. Do processes still run at the login screen?

Try pressing CTRL-ALT-Delete after you get into windows (and while your system is still stuck) to find out what process is eating your CPU cycles. Find out what program that process belongs to and uninstall it. See if that helps your boot up time.

Chris, my CPUIdle program fluctuates, but stays around 97 during the process. It eventually goes down to zero, but then when I'm using XP fine it somestimes peaks back up to 97 or so. What type of numbers should I be concerned with?

normally I see system lag when a process is using 20+% of my cpu cycles. Are you running antivirus? If so are you doing start up scans? What programs are in your start up file...

Chris, I'm running Norton Antivirus 2003, but I've unchecked all of my start-up items and the system still halts or lags for about 2 minutes. Now this 2 minutes will happen if I type my password and login immediately after I try execution a system function. And again, I won't get the lag if I wait the 2 minutes out and not type a password to login but let the computer sit it out for 2 minutes.

its your process's starting at start up that is lagging your computer.

Are you on a domain? if so set your dns settings to look at a windows 2000 domain controller

If you are not on a domain type msconfig into a run box. goto the startup tab....check through there to make sure a program called precision time or date manager is not running. Also download spybot and adaware (build 162 not 160) and run those to make sure you don't have spy ware installed that is loading. Also turn off autostart options for programs like real player, aol, instant messenger, winamp, etc....all those things in your system tray that you don't like or use....

Chris, it was a new install. I'm required to login because I installed PCAnywhere and that requires Windows to not allow fast user switching and requires a login. It's a local connection to DSL. I'm not on a network otherwise.

I have adware, but since it's a new install I wouldn't have thought I'd have something messing me up right off the bat.

And remember, even with everything in my startup (i.e., msconfig/startup) unchecked, it still lags.

download BOOT VIS tool from www.microsoft.com and run the FIRST BOOT and TRACE function and then run the OPTIMIZE function. It requires a boot after each function. Also, it takes a minute after boot up for the operation to start to wait, but before hand disable your screensaver.
Get a good look at the graphic time line display of every boot process and you can easily see where the delay is. Also, the OPTIMIZE function lays out your files on the disk for better operation.
It works.

Do you have network card install the O/S sometimes waits for a reply from the network card/s and eventually gives up if unplugged or gets a reply either way takes time,

Sounds about the same time as mine takes to laod, admitted I have Nortons stuff, Trillian, firewall, email checker, diary, 2 network cards, and so on. and about 101 appz and a huge registry file for it to look at to-boot.

So I put the coffee on suggest you do the same.

As a matter of interest however a band new install on a P4 2.4GHz takes about 15 seconds to boot from "click to Ready" with no software installed. it slows the more software you add.

My Windows XP is doing the same thing. It started just recently after many months of working fine. After I log in the PC appears to hang for about 2 minutes. The whole time watching Task Manager, my CPU rarely gets above 2-3%. The hard drive is also idle. After the 2 minutes the PC behaves normally again. The weirdest part though is that it still happens in Safe Mode. BUT if I go to Safe Mode and log in with a different user (e.g. administrator), the problem never occurs. Could it be a corrupt user account? (Of course I have checked for disk errors, viruses, etc).
