I recently installed Windows XP Pro on a freshly formatted hard drive using a full install.Everything is working great except now when ever I restart the computer, I get a menu popup that asks me what operating system to use(Windows XP or Windows 98). There is no other operating system on my computer and I only have one partition that has been converted to NTFS.Any suggestions on why this menu is showing up and how to disable it? Thanks in advance.

You have an entry in your C:\Boot.ini file that for whatever reason is listing a previous operating system. The file is hidden, so you may have to find the file by going START, SEARCH, C:, boot.ini. When you see the copy of the file in the c:\ directory, double click it. The file should look similiar to this. Remove entries that have Win 98, and save the file. Restart and see if this works. Make sure you make a copy of this file before you edit it, in case you mess it up.
[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition

boot to the recovery console and type, fixmbr

YOU CAN FIX THE PROBLEM VERY EASY IF THE OTHER SOLUTIONS DID NOT WORK............
......RIGHT CLICK 'MY COMPUTER', CLICK
'PROPERTIES', GO TO 'ADVANCED', CHOOSE 'SETTINGS' FROM 'STARTUP AND RECOVERY', CLICK 'EDIT' FROM 'SYSTEM STARTUP', UNDERSTAND HOW THIS FILE WORKS, AND ERASE THE PRESENCE OF THE OPERATING SYSTEM THAT IS NOT INSTALLED.HOPE THIS HELPS.

Just go to Run type msconfig hit enter. then in System Configuration Utility select General tab click on Selective Startup and then on Use Original BOOT.INI. Then Apply,Close and Restart.
