is service pack 3 the same as sp1 and 2 if so i may upgrade but is it like vista and not compatable with most programs or just same compatability as sp2 thanks

M$ never have ... and never will .. issue XP SP3 because XP is Vista's biggest competitor. Steve & Bill rather you forsake XP for Vista.

Regardless of what M$ plan to do, HERE is an unofficial preview of SP3. As with any major service pack it's prudent to wait and hold off at least until the dusts settled down.

According to MS there is a planned release of a Service Pack 3. However, it is not scheduled for release until sometime in 2008. Actually it states "1H CY2008" - I don't know what the "1H" stands for - perhaps first half?

Yes it stands for first half but I doubt they will ever issue SP3. Didn't Steve say XP is Vista's biggest competitor? Use your common sense.

I don't know about SP3 but I have recently obtained a slipstreamed "SP2+" unattended instal DVD that includes all common device drivers up to January 2007 and all post-SP2 hotfixes up to mid Feb2007. The disk is based on a SP2 slipstreamed CD that I made from an original pre-SP1 disk. It uses my key. Someone I know decided to take up this project after a previous developer moved onto something else last year. I believe the process could be applied to any XP version but I haven't sought detailed instructions from the developer on how it was accomplished. The disk also came back with about 250 other programs and an automatic installer that allows unattended instals of any of them.
I look forward to experimenting with it this weekend once I get a new harddrive to play with. My own system has been so stable for about 4 yrs that I have no need/desire to wipe/reinstal.I used to have a signature but it disappeared and I just couldn't be bothered writing another so please feel free to ingore this.

I would say past experience is a better indication of future expectations.
Windows XP was launched in 2001. Windows 200 had two service packs that were released after that: SP3 in 2002 and SP4 in 2003.

This has been around for a while and I do not guarantee the content. http://www.thehotfix.net/

Maybe Maybe not but the fact remains that...
M$ is not interested in SP3...
at all.

...and then they pushed it further out again. Does does this mean to you? BTW it cost a lot of $$ & manpower to create SP3. They are too busy working on Vista SP1 and whatever comes after Vista.
i_XpUser

I don't. MS has always been late with everything.
"BTW it cost a lot of $$ & manpower to create SP3."
True, but think about this. MS does not support any versins of XP prior to SP2. Why is that? Because any patches they do release have to be tested and qualified for all "supported" configurations. By restricting their support to SP2 they effectively eliminate many different combinations of patches they must test against. And since MS has stated they will support XP until 2014 I think it would be in their best interest to push out another SP at some point and then restrict support to that SP.
As a manager of a release team (i.e. testing) for a software company, I do have some experience in this area. The longer they wait to put out a SP the more money it costs them to release current patches. We make decisinos every day to hold back certain fixes because of the expense to QA it in time for the next release - but then again we need to do a release every week because of the market we serve.

I think it would be in their best interest to push out another SP at some point - I agree with that. Let's revisit this issue again once we know the direction M$ has taken.

Exscuse my ignorance....but doesn't bit rate have anything to do with this discussion ?
Win XP is 32.
Win XP has 64.
Vista is 64 bit.
We are talking public OS not Server or Industry OS.
Just like 98 and ME were slowly let go of won't XP find that OS God in the sky also?
M$ are aware that the public are afraid to let go of what they know, and after we get our SP3 at a later time we will be talking about how we remember that old OS XP.
Thats called evolution.
I will stay with XP long into the future....until Vista has proven itself at least :-)

"Exscuse my ignorance....but doesn't bit rate have anything to do with this discussion ?"
Absolutely! In fact, I think 64-bit *may* create a quicker demise for XP. Well, 32-bit at least, 64-bit XP never really took off. But, that will only occure if software providers start creating 64-bit applications in mass. If that happens, then one of two things could occure to make getting off XP worthwhile.
One the software providers may not provide 32-bit versions of their application because of the additional costs and/or users will find greater benefits in using the 64-bit applications. However, I have seen very few applications that have much performance gain in using 64-bit code aside from video or image editing.
