I'm hoping someone can help.

When I try to install Windows XP SP3, I get the following message:

C:\windows\system32\kernel32.dll is open or in use by another application

I have shut down all of my applications, even tried disabling my antivirus software and removing my wireless mouse transmitter, but it still won't work.

Any advice greatfully received.

Generally when installing a Microsoft Update or SP you will get this error when another application is using the kernel. Such as a program or if you are copying a file to the hard drive or something like that. Check in the task manager under the processes tab is running anything unusually under your user name. Could be a virus or another program running in the background if so kill those processes. If there is nothing unusual, then you might have some corrupted windows files. Try doing a system recovery using the disc boot into it like installing windows and select the system recovery.

Did you download the complete SP3 installation file or are you getting it thru Windows Update?

Download the file, reboot, then double click to install:

Is it not possible to install SP3 from Safe Mode? I've never tried, but it could be worth a shot..
