Im currently running xp home edition on it.Every few days it shuts it self down at random times with no warning. I have no idea why this is.
Its a Xeno m laptop by Rock with the following stats:
CPU:Intel Pentium 4 Mobile 1.7Ghz to 2.2Ghz
RAM:256Mb
HDD: 40gb
Video card: 8Mb to 64Mb (from Bios) SIS 650
Audio card: SIS 7012
Modem:56k MDC
LAN: 10/100 RJ-45 SIS
Optical drive: DVD/CDRW (combo)
PCMCIA: 1 x Type II - O2Micro OZ6912I know it could be overheating but am not sure if it is this or bad ram, or a virus.
I am not sure whether its a hardware or software problem.
Ive also had problems shutting windows down where it would freeze on saving settings. I have tried the windows update but that doesnt work.
I need help!!!!!!!:

When you say shut down, does it shut down totally as in an ACPI shutdown or is your system locked up?
If it shuts all the way down, I say its overheating. Check your heat compound on it.
If its software, do this:
Right click on my computer, properties, advanced, startup and recovery, and uncheck "automatically restart"
That should tell you if it is a software error by not restarting. It will prompt a blue screen and display what kind of error it is.
Usually on home systems, system locks ups are more so related to memory and to HDD.
GL with it, post your findings.
Tony

HI:You mentioned the following :
CPU:Intel Pentium 4 Mobile 1.7Ghz to 2.2Ghz
Just Curious did you Overclocked your CPU ?
IF yes than you did answer your own question
Your system is Overheating and Shutdown itself
Good luck ..

1)It does shutdown all the way. How do i check the heat compound?
no i didnt overclock it it is 1.7GHz speed

Ok i did what u said tony and Right clicked on my computer, properties, advanced, startup and recovery, and uncheck "automatically restart". It didnt restart and came with that blue screen which said this:
Blue screen
---------------
A problem has been detected & windows has been shutdown to prevent damage to your computer.PAGE_DEFAULT_IN_NONPAGED AREA
.......
THEN TECHNICAL INFORMATION:

this is a software fault i assuming because it didnt not restart
any ideas what i should do to correct this above

Did you install any memory recently?
Did you install any software recently?
did you change any BIOS settings recently?Try reinstalling SP to see if that helps.
Tony

no havent installed any memory recently neither have i changed any BIOS settings
I have installed quite alot of software
Dvdsanta
and smartftp but nothing which would affect in this way. What do u mean by reinstalling sp? what is sp
thanksTry reinstalling SP to see if that helps.

some guy suggested i do this what do u think?
there are three xeno notbeooks, xeno, xeno m and xeno spThe problem you descibe is most often associated with bad video drivers
go here:
http://www.mobile-support.net/
punch in your model
download all the drivers for you machine
Then go here:
http://www.drivercleaner.net/
download driver cleaner proinstall it.
Now, go to add/remove software in control panel and uninstall anything to do with sis graphic display drivers
Reboot into save mode,
Run driver cleaner pro and choose the SIS setting and remove the remaining debris
Now, reboot into normal. If windows says it's found new hardware
Install the newly downloaded drivers.

HI:It sounds like either your CPU is going south or maybe the Fan on the CPU is not working Properly or not working at all,
I still believe the BSOD above Related to a Hardware issues not to Software
PS:is your Ram Good ?
Good luck..

When I said SP I meant Service Pack.
Your system restore seems to work now?
Another approach to your issue is power/heat.
Does your bios have a setting to change the CPU speed? such as automatic or mimimal performance or maximal performace? This would come into play when power is low to the laptop or too much heat.GL with it, post anything else you find and we'll see if we can help.
Tony

i currently running service pack 1 should i try 2
i tryed it before and didnt like ithavent got a clue about the bios settings

I have seen some issues where some computers and O/Ss do not like SP2.
About the Bios settings, load failsafe defaults and see if that helps.
Sometimes if the system is under harsh conditions as overheating, low power or such, the system will alter the bios but will not revert back to those default settings even once normal conditions are returned.
Try that, and post your findings.
Tony
