Everytime i go to shutdown, instead of shutting down, it actually restarts my computer, its wierd, anyone can help???

I have the same problem. I am not sure but I think it happened after loading Office XP. The PC is a HP.

Hi
After loading XP I find my cursor disappears when I click on the menus. Then I have the same problem as above.

If any of you have Easy CD Creator 5 installed then you're problem is most likely Direct CD/Take Two. Don't use these applications under XP because they will give these problems.

i have easy cd 5 installed but im pretty sure it started happening befor ei instaled ez cd....so must be another program, i hane no idea

Yes..
i have the same problem with that.
I was playing around and found that windows XP and office XP have conflicts( how you ask as both are micros0ft) - i dont knowthere are also other programs that i installed and it crashes..
try installing the os first..reboot
play around
reboot about 5 times...then install each program 1 at a time..botting at least 2 times between each one to see what is causing troubles..
try it..

I was having the same problem. When I went to shutdown my computer would automatically re-boot. Make sure all your programs are closed before you shutdown your system. My DSL was causing mine not to shutdown properly.

I have the same problem and I'm hoping there's someone out there with a solution. I thought it was Roxio/Adaptec too, but it happened when I didn't have it installed. Matter of fact, I had very little installed. CloneCD, CDRWIN, WinACE, CuteFTP, Aspi drivers (so CDRWIN would work). Just keeps restarting. PLEASE HELP!!!

Same problem. Instead of shutting down, it reboots. Any solutions out there yet? Does MS know about this? Help please!!

The solution to your problems lies in the APM. You guys have to enable the APM (Advance Power Management) within your Windows XP. By default it is inactive. Just enable it in control panel and do a restart. I have noticed that if you do a shutdown, the shutdown problem will not save the changes that you had made. Thus making you go in circles. I hope this helps. It worked for me, built 2462.

I tried enabling the advance power management settings. Still reboots everytime I want to shutdown. Personally, I think the problem is with Adaptec/Roxio. They should have a fix out within a couple months as I'm sure the problem will be very widespread.

My computer restarted when I was trying to shut it down. I found that my problem was the driver for my dvd player. After I uninstalled the driver, the computer shutdown.

i have problem with windows xp shuting down.everytime i shutdown windows xp,it could not automatically power off like windows 98se.can any one tell me how to make it ?

1) Tried un-installing Direct CD and Take Two, but to no avail.
2) Tried disabling the APM (Advance Power Management), but caused me to encounter my 1st blue screen of dead for wxp.
3) Finally, removed Easy CD Creator completely and the problem is resolved.
Note: From the Roxio website, it mentioned that they'll be a Roxio Easy CD Creator upgrade for Windows XP after the official launch date.
Hope that helps.

What's probably happening for all you guys with the Shutdown/Reboot problem is that the system is crashing on shutdown (as is currently happening to me), but you've got the "Reboot on system crash" option (under the system settings) enabled. This option is enabled by default.
The reboot is happening too fast for you to ever see the blue screen, so you assume it's a normal restart. (This used to happen to me under Windows 2000 at random times because of a bad video driver.)
If you turn off this option, instead of rebooting your system will probably reveal to you the oh-so-helpful blue screen of death, which will probably read "LESS_THAN_OR_EQUAL_TO ... The operating system was halted to prevent damage to your system [by an error which we know about, but damned if we're going to fix it] 0x00000050(xxxxxxxxxx,...)"
Enjoy...

The last post is exactly right. Unfortunately I've found that the only way to fix the damage that Roxio caused is to fix the XP installation with a reinstall. (Just removing EZCD5 doesn't seem to work in bringing it back to normal). Hopefully, Roxio addresses the whole problem that the software caused and not just a compatibility update.

go to shutdown, instead of shutting down, it actually restarts
It's Roxio's Direct CD that causing the problem, If you have Easy CD Creator 5.02b just uninstall Direct CD, then reboot and Now you will be able to shut down I have tested this and 3 different kinds of PCs and this is the solution!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Have tried all of the above... never even had Roxio on my HP Pavilion (which came loaded with XP Home). Set it to 'stay off' on crash. Any other ideas?

Mine restarts when I tell it to shut down too. Microsoft windows XP is another version of windows with bugs. I want my money back.

Me too.
No Easy-CD installed. APM enabled.I have Asus P2B-F motherboard, and read somewhere that this could be trouble. Cant get the boot from CD fix to work.
Anyone else?

I Have an Asus P2B mother board and have had the same reboot on shutdown problem.
I found the problem was my board had a old bios version installed when I installed Windows XP(pre year 2000 version). The fix was to flash upgrade the bios to the latest version then re-run windows XP setup and use the repair option. This is necessary because Windows XP only detects your system's bios power management settings during Windows setup. Also make sure power management is enabled in bios after the flash upgrade.Hope this helps someone.

I had the same problem. I had roxio ecd5 installed . All i had to do to solve it was to disable restart if system fails. to do this go to the startup and shutdown options in system then deselect the option.

Great i know know that restart on shutdown isnt my fault. This has probly been the source of my increased electrical bill. Well Know i think i know how to fix it thanks for all posts i read

I had the same problem. This is my fix
I uninstalled roxio easy cd. That was not enough. I then set my system to restore to my first restore point after that I undid the restore and everything was back to normal
