anytime i log unto my sytem, i get this window message that says 'windows cannot find the file scvhost.exe. make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again. to search for a file, click the start button, and then click search'.

i have actually done that and found nothing. but on checking tasks running, i discovered several instances of scvhost files running. i have scanned my computer for any virus and discovered none.

some programmes on my system have refused to run and i can practically not download from the internet especially games.

can you help?

I have 5 of them in my XP Home ---normal

Svchost.exe is in this folder
C:\WINDOWS\system32

This web site breaks EXE down to tell you which XP Service has a Svchost running ---

Task List Programs

I have eliminated one of my 5 Svchost by changing DNS Client Service to Manual Startup type.

Here you can find out which XP Services you really need running ---

Information about XP Services

OOPS --- I did not look at your spelling, SVC vs SCV

NOTE this --
You have the Backdoor.Sdbot.N virus, or one of the Gaobot viruses, or one of the many other viruses which drop SCVHOST.exe (not to be confused with SVCHOST further down this page).
That is from Task List Programs website.

Most Virus and Spyware scans are likely to work better in Windows Safe-Mode.
