There is a school of thought that suggests registry cleaners are very risky and best avoided. Even if you let them save the entries they remove, the chances are that you will not know which save needs to be restored if you hit a problem at some later date. In any event you might not know it is due to a registry cleaner anyway.

Take particular care with RegSeeker. It is very "thorough". I have proven instances where it removed valid entries, one stopped one of my programs from working (repeatable). It also killed off one of my entries in CP/Add-Remove (also repeatable).

Registry cleaners never understand when an entry has been allowed for future use. They also can't understand when a file is qualified, such as setup.exe/g (rather than setup.exe which exists). It will not find a file called "setup.exe/g" so will say the entry is invalid.

You need to ask yourself:
What is the problem for which a registry cleaner is the solution?

I have and still do use several including Regseeker, Ccleaner, EasyCleaner and others.

Derek is right about RegSeeker.

It is very aggressive and I too had a crash after using it. Now, I only delete the items listed in green fonts and since starting that, have not had any problems.

My favorite is part of SystemSuite Professional and although it is a retail package, it can be obtained free. I bought a copy today at a Fry's store that is free after all rebates.

I have deleted everything they recommend including the items in red fonts and had no problems but generally, I stick to deleting those in green fonts and a few in yellow and red fonts if I recognize the items they are listing as being part of programs or documents that I have removed.

Just to add that one of the RegSeeker issues I mentioned in #2 was a green item.

If you have a reasonable working knowledge of the registry then it helps. Whatever, take great care using registry cleaners and keep all saves for a long time.

I have been using this guy for many years and never had an issue with it. Just let it find and fix it.
