I ran Norton Antivirus and did a Live Update, after this it said I had a virus which was put into quaranteen. It told me I had to restart my comp and when I did Windows XP would not load. It goes to the splash screen and reboots. That is all it does. I have not tried starting in safemode. What can I do?

Try starting in safe mode. If you can get into Safe Mode and/or the Command prompt mode you can run "sfc /scannow" at the command window to have Windows search for an replace any potentially missing/corrupted system driver.

also you could potentiall run System Restore to when your computer was working correctly (though I usually hold onto this option as a last resort only).

If you can't get into Safe/Command mode winodws at all you can boot to the XP CD and run some of the tools in the Recovery Console (ie. chckdsk, fixboot, fixmbr, etc.) to see if those recover issues.

To me it sounds like a corrupted system driver/file that is causing the reboot. *OR* you could potentially have some bad ram. You can use an alternate PC to download a DOS based MEM Test and run it from a floppy to test your memory. If you have multiple sticks of ram you could also just test one stick at a time to see if your results change.

I have seen either issue I've supposed it could be cause similar symptoms, but there are certainly more possibilities to be sure. The above should give you some good starting checks.

Hope it helps!

Michael
