Specs: Windows xp pro, 2g ram
windows xp professional freezes during install on a new hard drive. it gets all the way to installing devices at 34 minutes left and then freezes. I've tried to boot up on the hp recovery disk, but it will not install so i'm using my windows xp pro that i built from an iso. i've removed the media device to see if that was the cause of the issue.

Some piece of hardware is the cause of the problem - why the new drive?

Most likely if not a new machine is the motherboard/processor is dying. On a new machine RAM would be most likely cause - but it could be any hardware item.

I put a new hard drive in believing that the old one was bad. I haven't worked on pc's in awhile as I'm a server person. A trojan attacked the old drive, however, it was initally partitioned with a c/d; as such, i reformatted the c drive to install a fresh copy of xp pro, however before doing so, i tried repair to no avail. also the owner of this pc, this is not my personal pc, decided to do some cleanup themselves and blew away various .dll. This machine is 5 years old, yes, it's really not worth working on, however, i thought i would give it a try. their data is still intact on the old drive. fort. i can take the new drive back.
