You could try running the game program under a 98" compatability mode although this does not always work. You could also try installing setup re-configured to an appropriate compatabilty mode...usually with visual themes disabled. (maximize for performance...I say! Heretic 2 has never been better!) I have tried many times with Beyond Atlantis 2 and have only ever gotten it to work once however even though it is clearly labled as being XP compatible. If you know how to bring back the Dolphin, I'm all ears.

To maximize performance:
Control Panel>System>Visual effects>Custom or Adjust for Best Performance...Custom if you would some control even if you choose to click none.

After installing your game, select on your exe possible compatibility mode 98" and no visual themes and try to run. If no success then uninstall all components. Try again.

This time select on your installation disk, don't let it autoinstall. Select run program in Win 98 compatibility mode with no visual theme enabled. Could work? I don't know.

Other settings you may consider: Right click on desktop>properties>appearance> Buttons=classic, scheme=classic...only if you are willing to give up the stream lined nature and colorful presentation of XP, which often just decides it's not right for me anyway.

I am uncertain if this will answer your question but maximizing for performance seems to be working great...so far, faster than ever. But please be cautious. I don't want you to be angry for any ill advice I might be giving regarding your computer.

I find if an older game or program cannot be installed by
way of the CD then use "Program Compatibility Wizard" to install it.
If the game is installed, but will not start by way of
the CD, then when inserting the CD hold down the left
Shift key for approx. 15 sec. to keep AutoRun from taking over.
Now click the game in the "All Programs" list. Should start.
---------------
From a Microsoft web page:

If an older application gives you trouble when running
Windows XP, you can set the compatibility properties
manually so that the program runs in a different mode,
such as Windows 95, or in a different display or resolution
setting. To set the compatibility properties for a program:
1. Right-click the executable or the program shortcut to the
executable, and then click Properties.
2. Select the Run this program in compatibility mode check box.
3. From the list, select an operating system that the program
runs in comfortably.
4. If necessary, also change the display settings and/or
resolution, or disable the Windows XP visual themes.
Run the program again when you?re finished changing the
settings. Adjust the compatibility settings again if the
program is still not running smoothly: a program that's
unhappy on Windows 2000 may flourish on Windows 98.
