My system is terribly messed up, that I'm getting a new one (I planned to anyway). I'm going to buy Windows XP Pro for it, but I'm unsure whether I should get x64, or just the standard XP Pro.

I've read up on the differences, but I do have some thoughts. I know there are only certan AMD/Intel processors, or motherboards which will work with it..etc.

But, I'm unsure that if I use XP Pro x64 I have to for most applications/software/games I have to get the x64 versions and/or x64 updates needed to run it.

I've heard different people say stuff, and I'm just confused - I need someone to clear this up for me.

Thanks in advance.

I wouldn't advise getting x64. Why not just fix what you have for the time being & wait until Vista is released & the kinks are worked out of it?

Vista will be a while, we all know that. I have a bad HDD, it's a bit messed up, I could probably just get a new HDD, buy windows on CD and it would all work out..

But this just gives me a chance to get a brand new system, with a better processor, motherboard, for better capabilities on upgrading it (which I will do). I'll probably get it fixed and then I can use it to run as a server and other stuff.

I guess I'll take your advice and just go with the standard XP Pro..

You already have the standard XP Home, is there anything so compelling that you have to have another version of XP?

It is more logical to put the money towards Vista than anything else.
