Hello to all, the problem i am having is, i formatted my hard drive, which i wanted to do and i put in my xp pro cd and it says "boot from cd press any key" which i did. To make a long story short, i went through the whole installing process and everything went well and when it finished, the cpu rebooted itself and then the screen came up "boot from cd press any key". If i don't press a key, it nevers starts up, if i press a key the process of installing starts all over again like i never even did it. please help thanks!

To start with, WHY did you reformat? That *usually* indicates there was a problem. And if it's a hardware problem, reinstalling Windows obviously won't fix it.

How old is this old PC? If it originally came with Windows 98 then the chances are you only have 64 Mbs of memory. Plenty for Windows 98 but very little for Windows XP.
The chances are that it was slow that you never gave it chance to start up.
What are your system specs?

19085 mb is your hard disk capacity, tiny by modern standards.
The presario 4840s came with a Pentium II CPU and 32 Mbs of RAM.
I would forget about putting Windows XP on that, its way to old.

Without a CD you have just screwed yourself I am afraid. You can look around Ebay and see if you can pick up a Windows 98 CD. They don't have the same restrictions as Windows XP.
