When I bootup WinXp Pro, it hangs with a black screen just before the login screen should appear, but the monitor light does remains green. It has worked fine for some time, but only recently it has been problematic when booting.
I have not updated any graphics drivers recently etc. Is there any way of seeing what is causing this e.g. event viewer and if so what do I look for? To get around this, I choose the "last know configuration that worked" when booting when I have to restart due to the problem.
Also, I dual boot with w98se, which still remains fine.

You should try a different or update the video drivers. Also, make sure your not forcing a resolution / refresh rate not compatible with the vga adapter or monitor.
