Someone gave me a Dell Latitude laptop that was a mess. They bought a new copy of windows xp Pro and wanted me to do a clean install of the OS. The laptop didn't have a cd-rom inside, but had an external hooked up through what may or may not be a scuzzy interface. I boot to the external cdrom, delete the partition and format it and install windows on the unused partition. Everything is going just fine (it took a looong time, but maybe because this is an old laptop and the connection isn't that fast). Once it finished loading windows and you get to the first reboot, it asked for User Names like I've seen it do in the past. Reboot again, and it comes to the windows login screen with the user name I gave it and it's asking for a password. It never gave me an oporunity to setup a password in the first place. I've tried, admin, blank, password, each time I try one, it returns a window that says "The system cannot log you on due to the following error: The specified domain eithre does not exist or could not be contacted. Please try again or consult your system admin". There are no other users available to select, just the one I entered originally. I even tried to do a windows repair and go through the whole process all over, but I came back to the same exact spot and I don't know what password they are asking for. I have a disc that could go into windows and change the users and admin's password, but I'd like to do this the proper way first. Any thoughts? Thanks

Some of the older machines were setup to ask for a generic password. It was "PASSWORD" HTH.

Follow up: I used ERC Commander boot disc to wipe the drive clean with a utitlity on that disc. Started the whole process over again, and this time it worked without a hitch. I wish I knew why it didn't work the first time.

The solution for this one is when you are prompted to enter your local settings enter default ones for everything (US English etc) and then enter your network settings etc. If you enter a different local it will skip network/workgroup settings and you're back up siht's creek.
