windows xp pro freeze at startup

I had windows 98 second edition installed, but it gave me problems so I upgraded to Windows XP Pro and it was running fine. I came home and turned it on, I got a blank screen. I restarted and then I got a baby blue screen saying that 'disk needs to be checked for consistency'. After it had checked and even truncated some files, it just froze at the baby blue screen. Everytime I restarted it would either give me a blank screen and freeze, or the baby blue screen and freeze.
However, I went into safe mode and everything was ok. I tried to restart and I got the black screen yet again. Anyone has any clue on what to do, please let me know. I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you.

There seems to be a driver or hardware problem with your rig. It is recommended to install XP from scratch and avoid upgrading it from a previous windows version.
Install XP with only the AGP card - and Harddisk ofcourse - installed. After inst. XP seat the PCI cards one at a time and reboot after every installation. Insert the next PCI card and so on.
