no, the only way out of the blank screen is power off. I can get it into safe mode, but you can't run activation from there. I can try command line. Don't know the command - or at least what I have tried has not been recognized. thanks

The XP 30-day activation countdown begins as soon as XP is installed, so you should have encountered the activation screen almost 2 yrs ago. Assuming it was legally activated at one time, making hardware changes can trigger the need to re-activate again. Have you made any changes?

If it won't work in safe mode then command line won't be a lot better. Is it the lack of connectivity that stops activation in safe mode? in which case try 'safe mode with networking'

Another option - try setting the BIOS date back two years (if you can remember the date ;-) ), activate as soon as it boots up & then restart, reverting to the correct date - no idea if it will work but worth a try.

I activated the software when I first got the PC - and downloaded all the available patches. I have no idea why it is now being a pain in the butt. The system date is a good thought, I'll give that a try. Thanks
