Did you try to boot into safe mode?

In safe mode you should be able to look at the log files and see what might be causing the issue and also be able to perform repair options like removing any new software that you may have installed to cause the problem.

This problem is caused by a change in the system.

A few questions to try and track the problem down.

How old is the computer?

Have you installed any new hardware hd cdrom graphics card ram etc?

Removed any hardware...an unused modem etc?

Have you removed any software (programs) ?

Added any new software?
Be careful on this on as sometimes in surfing the net ,sites insist that you install a program to view their site.

Have you run any programs that you don't normally use?
Registry cleaners, or hard drive clean up programs?

Do you have and use an anti virus program?

If you can't think of any changes you made and you have been using an anti virus program then...

Did this just start or has the computer been getting slow and a little flaky....locking up, slow to boot and slow to shut down?

Ever have to just pull the plug to shut the computer off?

Do you have any cd's that came with the computer?
Do you have an xp live cd?
A win xp cd would be great.

I know ... a lot of questions and no answer.
