Ok, here's my crisis. I recently built a new computer with a ABIT KT7A board with a AMD Athlon 1.4 Ghz, 512 MB Ram, I have the HD, CD-Rom and A drive all hooked up along with a PNY Verto GeForce 2 MX 4000 64 MB grapics card in it while I'm installing Windows XP Pro. Here's the issue, I try installing windows XP, everything goes fine until it gets to the point where it says "Windows is now starting" or something along that nature, then it just locks up, the keyboard lights even go off. I tried downloading the 6 boot disk from MS, but when I put them in and restart and put it to boot with the floppy in Bios, it gets to the boot part and then says "I/O error". I'm pretty sure everything is hooked up right, and disabled everything about Cache I could find in the Bios, tried various other ways, and still locks up. Any help will be much appreciated before I turn my this computer into a burning pile of ruble..=)

For the locking-up problem, try pulling out non-essential cards(every thing but the graphics card). In many cases, it is an Ethernet card, modem or sound card that is hanging the installer. Once the os is up and running, you can add these cards one at a time.

For the "I/O error", check the FD drive, and the disks.

Hope this helps. Bye

Its your graphics card. For some reason it locks up when loading XP. Microsoft knows about the problem but there really isnt a fix for it. Just put in another video card and load up ex then switch the cards and install the drivers for them and you will be all set.

I think Jack D is right but before getting a new card try pulling all cards out and putting them back in again to check they are in properley, also check all ide cables on the mobo and devices attached.

If that doesnt work do as jack says that should do it.

Hit the F8 key as the computer is starting to boot up. Choose "enable VGA mode"... It
should start a with barebones driver in 16 color mode. At least it will tell you if its a driver problem or not.

Also turn the red stripe the other way on your floppy drive. not on the MB but on the floppy itself. I've done that a million times.

It is really really late in the evening/morning right now. I have finally been able to get windows xp loaded onto my newly built computer. (Athlon 2000 on a GA-7VTXE mother board - with a sound blaster audigy and a ati radeon 8500 video card and an ethernet card and a 120GB new hard drive).
Holy crap do I hate Bill Gates. Building the computer was easy. Installing Windows XP was a nightmare. The so called windows support website sucks the big one.
Upon installation, the system would hang on a blue screen of death and would generally give me a page fault error with a useless error code x000000050 or something like that. I uninstalled my sound card, my ethernet card, and my cd burner, leaving only my video card, floppy disk, and DVD/CD drive connected. Still blue screen of death. Frickin microsoft.
So, luckily I had my old machine and I resorted to my last resort - putting my old cheapo video card into my new sparkling degutted machine. Da da - no blue screen of death. After succesfully and painfully installing windows xp, i put my new video card in along with all my other cards and everything seems to be working so far. I'm going to bed. Hope my pain helps someone out.
Oh ya, switching the floppy drive cable around - that's the dumbest thing I've ever heard - do you work for Bill Gates?
Night

As far as i am aware if the floppy cable is the wrong way round it only prevents the floppy from fuctioning properley and affects nothing else.
But i agree, there is no need to call it a dumb suggestion, all suggestions are welcome when you are at your wits end and about to launch your computer out of the window.

I thought I had posted an apology, but I don't see it on the board here, so once again I am sorry for calling it a dumb suggestion.

I was referring to the disk I/0 error when i
mentioned the floppy cable !

My other suggestion would have worked fine if you had not had a spare video card.

I'm used to being called dumb but the Bill Gates thing was just to much !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
