Hello Everyone,

I just purchased a new eMachine from BestBuy. I haven't hooked it up yet as it is a gift for my wife, but it's just a question I have. I really wanted Windows XP on it but the salesperson told me that you couldn't even put XP on this computer, is this true? He said it had to do with SATA II. I've been installing OS's and software for a long time and I'm just wondering about this, if it is true or not. Can someone tell me anything about this?

Thanks,
Larry

Chances are that you can't find it with XP, for a couple of reasons. MS has stopped new XP licensing as of June 30th, if I remember correctly. Secondly, there won't be any XP drivers for that hardware, which is probably related to the SATA thing.

Hey guapo,

Thanks for the reply. I really like Windows XP and I haven't heard lots of good about Vista and I would like to option to choose which OS I want on my computer. Microsoft sucks, I know there are other OS's but I keep going to Windows for some reason. Thanks again.

You might be able to get WinXP running on the computer. Laptops are a bigger problem than desktops when it comes to hardware drivers for XP.

Whatever you do, don't go deleting Vista before you have collected ALL the WinXP drivers and created the Vista restore disks.

Keep in mind that you may not be able to use any of the other included software with the new computer if you switch to WinXP.

Emachines are not the best brand on the market. If you really want WinXP then you may still be able to find it pre-installed on some OEM computers.

Look at the link below for some examples.

Pre-installed OS is the most compelling reason to buy an OEM computer. If you don't intend to use the pre-installed OS then you should consider a custom unit. You could assemble yourself or buy pre-assembled.

I am assuming the Emachines can still be returned.

Personally, I'd return it and get a Dell with XP.

Have you really looked for the drivers? I have an emachine laptop originally with Vista. First problem the drivers are at a Gateway site. Gateway bought eMachine which were subsequently bought by Acer. Second problem they misnamed several of the files in the HTML dialogue. Files are obtainable at FTP site. Errors in spaces in names.

E-Machines with XP Home can be bought all day at Compusa.

Just bought one for $199.00 plus tax.

And I just custom built unit with 2 SATA 2 drives.

The salesperson is either very uninformed or pushing products he can make money on.
