Windows XP on a Dell Latitude CPx

I just bought a refurbished Dell CPx H (Pentium III, 500 MHz, 128 Mb RAM) off of Ebay to give to my daughter on her way off to college next week. There was no operating system installed. I've tried to upload Windows XP Pro, but the laptop has been locking up repeatedly before the installation is complete. I've reformatted the C drive to start over. Now, is XP just too much for this laptop to handle? Should I give up on XP and use Win 2000 or Win 98 instead?

Most likely. Go with Win 98 or 2000 if you have that option.

Usually laptops lock up or turn off themselves when the processor is too hot. I don't know if the laptop you mention comes with a fan or not, if it does check it, maybe it's not working properly.
XP and 2000 have still some issues, I'll suggest you to install 98SE since your daughter will use the computer for internet surfing and the regular college assigments. Windows 98 is good enough.

Sir: I have the same computer. No problem if you have the bios flashed with the correct version just go to Dell.com and find the correct one it will work like a dream. Don't use anything but Nt worktation XP or 2k.
