Running Windows XP on a laptop in a Windows 2000 AD Domain, I have mobile users "MY DOCUMENTS" folders redirected via group policy to the file server. "MY DOCUMENTS" is available OFFLINE and Everything is Automatically CACHED.
Problem is, RANDOMLY the said user's OFFLINE DOCS Disappear. This happens when user is either OFFLINE (Meaning not connected to the DOMAIN NETWORK) or at home on their HOME Network which is NOT a DOMAIN NETWORK, rather just an Internet Connection => Router => Laptop setup.
When user accesses "MY DOCUMENTS" folder, all docs are gone. Initially it looked as thought the user was performing a DISK CLEANUP which does have the option to remove all OFFLINE FILES, but that option has not been checked and the user is aware of this posing a problem.
Any Ideas.
Also, this said user has renamed the "MY DOCUMENTS" folder to DOCS. This may have some bearing.
Thanks in advance.
Regards.

I have not OFFICIALLY Solved this problem, HOWEVER:
After looking at some MS articles regarding OFFLINE FILE CACHING, I found that if the caching is set to AUTOMATIC, only files which are opened from the server remain when offline. In addition to this, these files are only temporary. Meaning that as a user opens and closes other files, an OFFLINE FILE cache fills up. This Cache has a set limit. It if fills up completely, those temporary OFFLINE files are deleted to make room for the new temp files.
This user was using a LOT of picture files as well as ITUNES. These were in the MY DOCUMENTS folder and set to be OFFLINE along with the important docs. So I am thinking that because these files were being opened and closed, the cache was deleting the DOCS files to make room for these other files.
*************SNIP******************
Manual Caching For Documents: With this option, the only documents that will be cached are those that the user specifically designates to be available offline.
Automatic Caching For Documents: With this option, when a user opens a file in this shared folder, it will be automatically downloaded and made available offline without the user specifying that it be an offline file. Older copies of a file will be deleted automatically to make room for files that have been accessed more recently. With this option, a file that the user has not opened while online will not be available offline.
Automatic Caching For Programs: All files in the folder will be made available offline. This option is used when the data in the folder is read-only, as with shared network applications. It shouldn’t be used if users will change the data in the folder. Here's a related Link:
http://www.winbookcorp.com/_technote/WBTA20000869.htmI've since made the change to MANUAL caching.
We'll see how it goes.
LEt me know if you come up with anything else too!
