windows xp not booting up

Soon after entering the password at bootup,
the computer gives a screen which says "We
apologize for the inconvenience, but windows
did not start successfully......." And gives
options for starting in safe mode or last best
known option or start windows normally." None
of these options work. It goes to a blank
screen when I choose "start normally" or "last
good working" options. When I choose "safe
mode" it lists a number drivers which start with
"windows\system32\drivers....."

So I tried using the Product Recovery Disk
that came with the Toshiba laptop. It goes
upto RAMDISK and then stops.
