For the first time in about a week I turned on my computer and the Windows XP login screen came up. I clicked on my username (its the only option). Windows booted up, but I was horrified to see that it appeared that all of my work, files, desktop icons, music, photos, etc. were all gone. The desktop icons were different. It's as if I logged in as a different or limited user even though my login is the only option available.

I rooted around in the 'documents and settings' folder and then in the folder for my username and all of my files thankfully are still on the computer. However, despite my login account being the system administrator, they do not show up, as do none of my personal settings.

Interestingly, when I looked in the documents and settings folder details, the computer does not think I have logged in since January 2005 even though my computer appeared fine as little as a week ago. There is also a temporary login (which is not an option when you login) that lists itself as last logged in on December 3, 2005 but not since even though I have started the computer.

Has anyone encountered a similar problem or have any advice? I called HP and they seemed to think it was a problem with 'multi user security.' Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Your best bet is to copy all your important data to a backup medium like a CD or DVD and wipe the system. Something like that is a nightmare to fix, so just start afresh.
