So my computer (windows xp) has been having problems with a mass amount of pop-ups for about a week or so now. I of course ran ad-aware, spybot and got myself a pop-up stopper. And nothing really has helped. And so about an hour ago it was freezing from pop-ups and I had to restart. So usually it just starts right back up says welcome and then it goes to the desktop well this time... it said welcome and then it went to a screen where you have to pick your user account... and there's only one account on my computer so I chose mine. And then it made the windows log on sound and i saw the desktop for a split second and then it just logged right off and went back to the account page thing. Is there anyway I can get into my computer... and get it stop logging on and then off?
If anyone could help me I would greatly appreaceate it! Thanks.
Stacey

First off , can you boot into Safe mode?
If you can , then, after typing in your admin. password, and getting to the desktop there Is where you would begin to try and fix a few things
1. run an antivirus check
2. delete all temporary internet files, also delete all offline content
3. delete all cookies
4. open internet explorer and goto , tools>internet options>settings> and make sure you only have 80 -100 mb of disk space usage for temp internet files
5. in the same tools>internet options>privacy ,,, Override automatic cookie handling and allow first party cookies and block third party cookies .
session cookies can also be allowed
6. Now go to control panel and open user accounts to see what users you have for your comp . Change the way users log on or off make sure welcome screen and fast user switching are both checked>
7. If nothing above helps then you may run
sfc /scannow notice the space in front of the hash (/) mark. that may be run from - start>run> and typing in the run box sfc /scannow ... You'll need your win xp disc in a drive ....
If all else fails perhaps someone else may also have a suggestion or two that'll probably be better than mine ...."P.S. If you can I would get SP2 rc2 and install it for blocking pop ups I run it and spyware gaurd (javacool software) spyware blaster , AVG anti-virus, and never seem to get any pop-ups
MSI 845e mb 768 mb am and a p4 2.4n running xp ,win 2000 advanced server and win 98 SE alot to learn and I know so little !!!!

I've been having the same problems as the 1st poster, so i'll just outline my problems, i had the huge ammount of pop-ups until yesterday, when i updated my Ad-aware and scanned, after removing the Spyware, i did a disk clean up + a de-frag, after it slowed down for a little it run fine, so when the night came i cloesd my machine down using the "Shut Down" option as always,
So when i go to log on this morning the machine would get to the log on screen, i'd enter my password (as there is only my login there) it went to the screen where it says somthing about resoring my settings (as it always does on each login) but then it just stoped, so i re-started and tried a few more times, before giving up and set it to its last known working config, so when i did that it would log on, but take a good 5 mins or more to log on, while giving me the 'System memory is low' message then random box's would pop-up saying 'There was a error starting up <program name> please close it down' so i picked Ok as there is no other option, when the start bar shows, and the icons show on the desk top, nothing will run, all the programs on the Start menu will show as the little box icon's when the programs have been un-installed, but the shortcuts are still there, and it will not open and folder.
After a good few re-trys i gave up and tried to start up in 'Safe mode' but it will not login under the Admin screen name, or my screen name,
is there anything i can do? i want to avoid wiping my computer, and as i ain't got a Windows XP Install disc (as when i bought my machine XP was already installed and the company (Dixons) didn't give me a Installation Disc)
PLEASE HELP!!

Have you tried to update your ad-ware stuff? Now I ran into this before so what I did was I wrote down the names of the stuff that pops up like new homepage, programs etc. then I look at the task manager look for some new and unusual names like lghaz, kegdi stuff like that and write them down. Now first you should restart and boot up in safe mode and search (start/search/for files...) for the unusual named processes you wrote down and when you find them delete them. Then run msconfig / startup and get rid of the programs you don't use and that seem to be ad-ware type stuff, then uninstall the programs in add or remove programs, then go to regedit and hit ctrl f and search for the first set you wrote down (homepage etc) once found delete them. Then restart normal. Sorry if it looks a little confusing but I try to keep it simple.
or try CWshredder at http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/htlogtutorial.html and do a little reading it seems to do the trick for most people.

These are all very helpful suggestions but I cannot get into my computer whateversoever. I tried safe mode and it just does the same as when I come on in regular.
I tried last known configuration and I thought for a second that I had it because it took a second to load and I saw the desktop in then just made the logging off sound and went back to the administrator menu thing. Anyother suggestions, to get me into my computer?!

A friend of mine is having the same exact problem. Unfortunately, I have not found an answer to it yet. I cannot log on to their computer through safe mode either. Nor can I reinstall Windows, because when I go through the process, it asks for a administrator password (he has no password, so I just hit enter), and it goes back into the Windows command prompt. Please help if you can!

Hello there
I have the exact problems like you guys, and I cant figure out what to do. Please help me, I really have to get the computer back in shape again.

I think it may have something to do with the ad-ware program.
I deleted my ad-ware yesterday and now I have the same problem. Can't start in safe mode either. Any fixes out there?

I'm having the same problem. Nothing works - safe mode doesn't work - last know good config doesn't work. I'm hoping someone will figure this one out soon! Has anyone tried an XP boot from floppy?

Guys, Here is the fix. You'll need to copy to a floppy the file "userinit.exe" from a working computer with Win xp. Just do a search for the file. It's under windows\system32. Insert the Win XP Cd and go into recovery option. Choose 1. When it asks you for an administration password press enter. Type A: to get an A prompt Then type the following without quotes. "copy c:\windows\system32\userinit.exe c:\windows\system32\wsaupdater.exe"
There is a space after copy and userinit.exe.
Restart and you should be good to go. Do a virus check because this is a virus that is causing the problem. Good luck.

Sorry it should be "copy a:\windows\system32\userinit.exe c:\windows\system32\wsaupdater.exe"
