Why is it that windows XP is less stable then its earlier dos based systems? I mean, I minimise my game (armyops) browse the internet, try and restore it and the screen goes permanently black. I press alt+ctrl+delete many times and nothing. This is really lame. I cant restore my system. It seems suseptable and prone.

Yep, kind of a flashy new toy that everyone wants. XP also gives you a bit more lag with all the trash it loads.

I run AA on Win 2kPro, no problems switching between AA and tracker.

Windows XP is much more stable than Windows 98. Windows 98 would crash all the time for me. Windows XP rarely crashes.

Another problem with Windows 95/88/ME is resources. Windows 95/88/ME were limited to 64K resources. Windows NT/2000/XP's resources was only limited to the amount of RAM you had. A lot of programs in Windows 95/88/ME would use up the resources and not free them. You were forced to reboot to free them.

If you have Windows 95/88/ME you can install the Windows Resource Meter and monitor them. As time went on you would see them get used up. If they got too low then need to reboot or your computer will lock up.

The only problem I have had with Windows XP is that there are some programs that won't work with it. Usually there is nothing you can do about except get a compatible version if that is available.

Ok well if thats true, why have I already had situations where my computer would not respond on windows XP pro, nor to key combos? Its been the opposite for me while using win98SE that was highly stable whilst XP has been rather foxy and a bit flimsy. Froms shutdown hangs to simple multitasking, e.g web browsing while having game minimised. Windows XP cant handle it at all!?

Are you comparing Win 98 and XP on the same system config? If you are, have you tried doing a clean install? I never used win 98, but I am probably the only that liked my Win ME. I never had a problem with Win ME and XP Pro is good too. I would prefer Win 2000, but I'm not going to shell out more money for it. In my experience XP is more stable than its predecessors, but I hate how "user friendly" it is with all the annoying balloon tips, tutorial animations, and other simplifying attempts that use up resources unnecessarily. You can fix these things, but it takes a while.

Yes, I agree with you, all the advice and help swamps the user and wastes up good resources that could be used elsewhere. I don't think Win98SE upgrade is classed as a clean install, but I shouldnt think it would effect anything.

Any solutions out there that I could use? Especially when my system seems unresponsive I am still assuming (I am probably wrong) windows XP has not crashed, so there must be some way to force it to respond, right?

conclusion, windows XP is less stable then Windows 98SE, certainly for me anyway. although I love how stuff loads like 3 times as fast...

An upgrade install will never be as stable as a clean install. During an upgrade, you are inheriting settings and configurations from your old OS, many of which are unsuitable for XP. I've used '98, ME, XP, and Server 2003 and found that any OS can be stable if it is tweaked to suit the system (yes, even ME). The problem stated at the start of this thread sounds more like a video card issue than an XP one. Even high end video cards should be tweaked to suit the system it is used on. Default settings on OS's and hardware are fine if you just want to surf the net and do a little word processing, but any more and you need to tweak everything to suit both the system and the primary use.

Hi,

If I've got it right, I see you have your system slightly overclocked, this might be the issue to your stability problems and not XP. Turn back your FSB to 133 double pumped to 266 instead of the 166(333) you currently have it set at and see if you still have the stability issue.

XP less stable than 9x?! You've got to be kidding! I've been working on desktop PCs for the last 6 years, and XP is definitely more stable, and once you turn off all the garbage, runs much like Win 2K Pro.

A fresh install is also a much better idea than an upgrade, if possible, as Sci-Guy mentioned, with an upgrade, you are inheriting settings and configurations from your old OS..

As to your problem, have you checked that your video drivers are the latest? Also, what resolution do you have your desktop set to, and what resolution do you run the game at?
