Hi everyone, tonight my computer seems to have a mind of its own and keeps restarting. I cant really get XP to boot up because it keeps restarting. Today I did install another Hard-drive but that drive was in the computer last week so I don't think it's the problem. I haven't truble shoot yet because I'm not sure where to start. However, the Computer is connected to the same outlet as my A/C and when I turned off the A/C it boots up.. however, soon as I turn it back on it restarts itself. Does that mean the power supply is gone? or something more severe.. thank u so much.

Okay, I tried the A/C thing again and it seems whenever I shut the A/C on, the thing restarts. However when it's off it will boot up. Before I do any changes, I just want to know if it's the power supply.. or should I just plug the A/C elsewhere?
Thanks

If you do not have a surge protector you need to go get one, they are not that expensive. It will protect your PC and other electronic equipments from those unexpected lower voltage surges that are common in residential electrical wiring.
FYI air conditioners require substantial amounts of energy to start and stop motors and compressors when you turn it on and off, so having it share outlet with your PC or other electronic equipment is not the best because it causes surges in power that disrupt the steady flow of voltage, this coupled with having an unreliable PSU in your PC does not make a good combination.

I used to have a similiar problem. I finally ran a seperate line to my breaker box and made sure that it was grounded and that is the linet that my computer is plugged into. I haven't had any problems with it since.

my computer just started doing that where it just keeps rebooting and rebooting. Since it never actually finishes, I can't run any sort of antivirus, etc. to see what the problem is. I am not connected as the OP is, to another source of power (i.e. his AC)
I updated Norton Antivirus and ran a virus checkon my system just before this started happening. I also went into my system and chose the setting to run a scan disk upon reboot because my system was running really sluggish today and I thought maybe there was a virus or a corrupt file or something. I then rebooted my system and instead of doing a normal reboot, it seems to be caught in a reboot loop. It just reboots over and over without fully booting up.
I tried going into safe mode, but that just gave me a bunch of file names that I can't access - here's one of them: multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(l)\WINNT\system32\l_intl.nls.
I don't know what this means.
Please help! (email me, as I'm using someone else's computer to type this) the_grot_shoppe@yahoo.com Thanks!

Even I am facing the same problem. I've tried almost everything. You had any luck fixing your problem?

Having the same problem with an XP. System starts, goes through setup then after XP-Pro screen, whole thing shuts down and starts back up.
I, however, ran some virus programs right before this happened. Good chance it took out some needed files to start windows. How do you reinstall from a CD when the computer won't stay on long enough to boot from the disk? Is there any way to get a command prompt from the start up?

Hi, mine did the same thing after I had a little oopse with my ram. Even after I re-formated, bout a new power supply, it still did it. First it was just off and on, while I was surfing or playing a game. Then it went to just random, even while the comuter was in standby. It would wake me up at night because it would just restart. Then I couldn't even load up windows. It would get to the "Windows drive check because windows was shut down improperly" screen and it would get about 50 percent done it's check and then restart. Did this all the time. Well, I got fed up and took it in to a place. They said it didn't restart on them the hole time it was there. So I brought it back home. As soon as I booted it up, it was good for about 10 minutes, then it would restart. Finally I reformated and left windows 98SE on it and it was fine. So I decided to do a reformat and try again with out installing any unecassary programs. You know, the ones you get with Sound cards and Video cards. It still restarted. I found this website that has some pretty interesting stuff on it. So far it seems to be working after trying just one thing and removing some possible program conflicts like Zone Alarm and Norton Antivirus. Apparently Norton doesn't have an update for the Windows XP Service Pack 2 yet. Anyway, check out this site and see if you find anything.
"kellys-korner-xp.com" So far it's working for me. If you find any other possiblilites let me know. on the site go to XP issues then find "Windows Xp Boot Problems and Edits" Some interesting stuff in there Ya? I'll let you know if it I find the problem or not.
