About six months ago, my computer caught a virus, a form of the MSBLASTER worm. Through some strategy, I was able to save my computer and remove the worm without having to resort to the FDISK or FORMAT C:/ anti-virus programs. My computer runs fine, however after some internet surfing, the connection will just die. Physically, there is a connection into the computer and under Start -> Connect To -> Show All Connections, the connection appears fine, 100 MBPS connected for x time. My internet connection comes off of a D-LINK DI-514 wireless router connected to a DSL modem. I am not sure why my connection spontaneously dies. It does not die immediately or after some fixed amount of time. I have to run the WinsockXPfix program and restart in order to get my connection back, I cannot just run the command "NETSH INTERFACE IP RESET LOG.TXT" to reset my connection. I run Adaware and Spybot Search and Destroy on a regular basis and have VirusScan 7.1 installed and running. Any ideas on how to troubleshoot this problem?

Avoid Intel Celeron CPUs, buy an AMD instead. Avoid Nokia, go Motorola instead.

It might be that one or more of your protected system files was corrupted by
the worm infection. There is an easy way to fix a protected system file corruption.
You have to have your original Win XP disk
available. (hopefully, you do).

Use the System File Checker tool to scan all files that are protected by Windows File Protection
Use the System File Checker (Sfc.exe) tool together with the /scannow parameter to immediately scan and verify the versions of all the system files that Windows File Protection helps protect. If the Sfc.exe tool detects that such a file was overwritten, the Sfc.exe tool retrieves the correct version of the file from the Dllcache folder or from the Windows XP installation source files, and then replaces the incorrect file. The Sfc.exe tool also verifies and repopulates the cache folder.

You must be logged on as an administrator or as a member of the Administrators group to run the Sfc.exe tool. To run the Sfc.exe tool together with the /scannow parameter, follow these steps:

Put your Win XP Disk in your CD Drive. It will be required if the following scan
finds any corrupted protected files.

Click Start, and then click Run.

In the Open box, type cmd, and then click OK.

At the command prompt, type sfc /scannow, and then press ENTER.

Type exit, and then press ENTER.

For additional information about the Sfc.exe tool, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

310747 Description of Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 System File Checker (Sfc.exe)

ALSO: Just to be safe, check to make sure all of your DLL's correctly registered by using the following procedure:

Reregister .dll files
Some of the core Internet Explorer .dll files may not be correctly registered.

To register key .dll files for Internet Explorer:

Click Start, and then click Run.

In the Open box, type:

Primary Hard Drive Letter:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe /rereg

Click OK.

Jimc5,
Thanks for your help. I did the file checker and it appeared to work fine. However, the Primary Hard Drive Letter:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe /rereg command did not work for me. I found another solution below, posted by "mohan" on another forum. Apparently this solution has worked for some people. I tried it on my machine, will need to restart.

"I was having the same damn problem and it was driving me crazy. IE 6 wouldnt open links in a new window and wouldnt open java pages (like yahoo games).
The following worked brilliantly.

Open an ms-dos prompt window and type the following hitting enter after each line.

regsvr32 Shdocvw.dll
regsvr32 Shell32.dll
regsvr32 Oleaut32.dll
regsvr32 Actxprxy.dll
regsvr32 Mshtml.dll
regsvr32 Urlmon.dll

It sorts the problem out completely. By the way I am using Windows XP pro and Internet explorer 6 and it worked just fine for me."
