Apparently, I have installed Windows XP Home on my machine twice as I reformatted my system today, since I am requested to choose between two identical versions while the computer boots. How can I actually delete one of these? Thanks

Control Panel System Advanced tab start up and recovery settings click the edit button
Delete the extra option (if they are both exactly the same then you can delete either one) save settings and close. if they are different make sure you delete the right one. the file is called boot.ini if i remember correctly
Done.

Thank you. When editing the boot.ini file, how can I distinguish the proper version from the other?

The newer installation will be listed first. This will not however remove the installation from your HDD. Refer to Sabertooth's post on how to remove it.
