Hi

A friend bought a computer with Windows XP preinstalled. When he tried to install the service pack he found out the software was pirated. He finally got an XP disk from the store with the cd key. He was having a lot of problems so reinstalled Windows again. About halfway through the installation I got this message

"error set up could not register the OLE controll
C:\windows\system32\initpki.dll because of the following error
DIIREGISTERSERVER returned error 3221225477(C0000005)

Error
The signiture for windows xp home edition setup is invalid The error code is
800b0001
Unknown trust providers"

The installation finished but the computer doesn't work quite right. Could someone tell me what's going on and possibly a fix?

Thank you

Best solution is to reformat the hard drive and do a clean installation.

Bootup with a Win98 startup disk and at the DOS prompt type in FORMAT C: /U then press the enter key.

Now reboot from the XP CD and install XP.

For the life of me I cant understand why people keep suggesting using a startup disk to format. With the bootable xp cd there is no need for a startup disk to format and clean install xp. When computer is up and running just pop the xp cd in the drive and when it asked you if you want to install windows just choose clean install other than upgrade and the xp cd will format the drive you select and install xp clean. No need whatsoever for a startup disk.

I did a clean install using the XP cd and if I do it again I suspect I will get the same message.

If you did not choose new installation, you didnt do a clean install. To even make things better if gives you the choose to delete the partition. If you delete the partition and recreate the partition then install xp you can rest completely assured there is no previous data from before.

Not so alex if you choose new installation and when it asked you where you choose the same drive as the one you have windows on now. It will ask you what file system you want to format it too and all. I have done enough of these that I know.
