My desktop windows xp icons like My computer, etc, always reset to the default icons when I restart the computer.
Does anyone know if it would be safe to copy over the default icons in the windows, and windows\system32, folders with different icons but with the same names as the default icons?
How else can I get the icons to permanently switch?

Not sure if this does what you want:
In Windows Explorer or Control Panel, click Tools in the Menu bar, click Folder Options, click View tab, in Advanced Settings list, find and check mark "Remember each folder's view settings".
