Have been using XP for seven months now. All seemed fine.
Today, system goes to Windows XP Pro opening screen, then insists that a Disk Check has been scheduled and commences to do a three-stage check. I see a report screen and then blackness... computer continues to hum, but keyboard/mouse irrelevant.
When power down and back up,F8 gets me to safe mode menu choices, but I cannot get to safe mode...system hangs once \windows\system32\mup.sys lists on screen.
Set system to boot to XP CD and access Windows Setup, Repair. Choose the only alternative available (1) and get to administrator password prompt... hit Enter because there is no password and get incorrect password error message>
Does anybody have any idea as to how can I get on top of this?
Thanks.
Tom

I uninstalled Q311967: Security Update and it appears to have fixed my problem. This update appears to have replaced the mup.sys

Tom,
Have you solved your problem? If so how? I have the exact same problem. Do you happen to have a Sony desktop? I do with an AMD up.
Thanks,Al

Thanks Scott. This solved my problem!
