This computer received a fresh install of windows xp over a year ago. Everything went great. Yesterday I attempted to mount a file with daemon tools in order to install it. I received an error during the installation, didnt think much of it and continued along without installing the program. I decided to reboot and try again later in the night and upon rebooting came across a problem. Everything during the startup process went well. No beeping, no weird hard drive noises or anything. But right after I logged in with my password and the usual processes should begin to popup (explorer, dumeter, etc..), nothing happened. All I see is my deskstop picture and nothing else. I attempted to run explorer.exe by opening taskmgr but got the error "This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Create an association in the folder options control panel". And I get this message for anything I try to run in that way. I also restarted in safe mode and the same exact thing happens. I am unable to explore anything and I'm out of ideas. Any help would be much appreciated :)

Hey, thank you for the help. I tried to edit that registry entry but when i got to HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\exefile\ there was nothing left to expand. I wonder if that is the problem in itself. I know a lot of people say this, but I doubt there is a virus. Thanks again.

I don't think a repair installation will rebuild my registry..

The above link says under Introduction--

There is a registry problem that cannot be solved by using other tools such as System Restore.

I think a repair install should repair the OS entries in the registry.

A system restore should also fix it.

I tried the repair install but it did not fix the registry entry under HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\exefile\ , it is still empty. I also tried to run system restore from the command prompt in safe mode by running C:\windows\system32\restore\rstrui.exe but the GUI gets stuck and doesnt show anything. Any other ideas (other than a fresh install)?

when I try to import that file it says: "Cannot import a:\exefix.reg: Not all data was successfully written to the registry. Some keys are open by the system or other processes."

How about in safe mode?

It sounds to me like you might have caught a virus from that application that you tried to install with Daemon Tools. You might want to try the security and virus forum.
