Just noticed: when I update Windows XP with the latest update OR when I install a new codec, Windows XP will not boot up in the next bootup and I have to go to 'last known good configuration'.

hello mate try the win xp disk at start up. just insert it and shut down and when you reboot just click on boot from disk option and then system restore to good point then you can use command prompt to type : "sfc/scannow" with xp disk inserted. this is system file checker and will prompt you when it detects a system file that is corrupt or missing just click yes and it will replace the file ok mate
