OS: Windows XP Pro
CPU/Ram: Celeron 566 / 256MB PC-13
Comment:

I have an emachine 566i2(celeron) with 256MB(PC-133). The problem is that when I leave the machine idling for a while it sometimes freezes completely. I have turned off hibernate/screen saver but it doesn't seem to help. I do have Symantec anit-virus installed. When I leave the machine there is NO application running except for the anit-virus. The other thing is that I'm using PC-133 instead of PC-100; could this be the cause of my pain? By the way, it hardly ever freezes when I'm using it! Please help. Thanx.

are you using a screen saver? I used to have the same prob with webshots and other 'aftermarket' screensavers... turn them all off and see if the prob continues - before you fdisk, etc.

You should use memory chips with correct speed for your motherboard. When I tried vice versa - using 100 instead of 133 - my XP was restarting all the time without any message.
So use correct hardware - You will only get in speed.

if it never fails when your useing it then it must be something that becoms active when the machine is idle....screensaves, norton av, power off features....check to see if your harddisk is set to turn off etc....good luck

also the pc133 mem has no problem steping down to 100....if it were the other way around then it could cause problems but it would more likely crash when your useing it or probally at boot time...anyway good luck
