Windows XP Freeze on start-up

I have a computer with a clean Windows XP build that has an intermittent problem where the system freezes during boot-up.
It will freeze anywhere from the initial black screen with the Windows Logo to up until right near the end of the login process (after clicking on the user name).
If I boot up in safe mode it works fine and if it gets past the log in the system runs fine (ie I get no freezing after the login completes).
I've tried all sorts of things including: * Removed and tried various combinations of RAM * Removed the network card * Removed the sound card * I've run dxdiag and it doesn't report anything wrong. * I've tried booting up with logging enabled but the log file (ntblog.txt) doesn't show anything as the system seems to freeze before it can log anything. * I've tried booting up in VGA Enabled mode but it still freezes.
Any help would be very very very appreciated as this is driving me up the wall.

try to look at the system log to see what failed. Mine used to do that,,but the problem was with the video card. dxdiag reported everything fine. I had to update the agp port itself.

The system log doesn't seem to report anything because it's not getting to the stage where I'm fully logged in. I've checked the application and system logs after a freeze and there are no entries for the time the computer froze.
