Hello,
Is there anything special in Windows XP specially built for IBM R40? Here is the story: I lost my recovery image partition and files while trying to put some partitions for linux. Then I installed Windows XP myself, but it is not from IBM, and not specifically designed for this machine. Just an XP from stock. It could not see many parts: ethernet, wireless, audio etc.. I dont know what else! I had to download all the drivers myself and install them one by one. But still there was something slow with the computer and espeacially when I scroll down pages, it was going very slow.. Feels like something is wrong.. I talked with IBM support, they said their XP is specifically designed for this machine..
My wonder is should I pay $45 to but a recovery cd from IBM or is this winXP ok for this machine?
Thanks for the advices..

If you have talked to support, with no good answer, and have to the best of your ability downloaded the Thinkpad drivers, I'd GLADLY pay 45.00 for an original CD

The think is, ALL laptops typically have special routines, for example Battery "fuel gauge", and in the case of my old AST, the display brightness/ contrast is controlled by software---something I haven't been able to find.

45.00 is certainly cheaper than even 1 short hour with a good tech, and if it'll fix the problem, that's CHEAP

By the way, does that thing have any processor speed control, or "speed step?"

I looked at the specifications of R40, this is type 2327, and there is Enhanced SpeedStep technology built. I am not very sure what it is but yes, there is one.

Hello,
Thanks, automatic driver update page was very useful.
And it looks good now.
I think recovery cd is not a mandatory. Only one thing I learned is: You cannot use the product key under the computer to activate retail copy of XP. That's what IBM told me when i tried to change the serial number of XP to the original serial number belong to the computer. (I made a mistake and installed my own XP with its serial number, not by using the serial number of the computer. The one i used was a corporate copy, and it was not updating to service pack 2, so I remembered to use the serial number under the computer to activate the XP -or re-activate with it..- BUT it did not want to accept the serial number i was trying to use: I called IBM support, they asked their manager, manager said:"not with our product key, you cannot do that" . So it turned out the mistake that i made at the very beginning was actually the thing i would have to do in any case..
The End
