Windows XP fails to boot/locks up

OS: Win XP Home
CPU/Ram: AMD 1900+, 1GHz
Comment:

During boot sequence a screen comes up saying Windows failed to boot correctly last time and gives me five options to boot this time (safe mode, safe mode with network, safe mode with command prompt, last good configuration, start up normally).
No matter which option I choose the typical splash screen appears, locks up then the system reboots back to the five options again!

Any advice?
