I just installed windows xp home edition, and i found out that when i log off, it doesn't turn off the computer, but instead sends a message stating that windows is ready to be turned off. Is there a way to make it power down the machine automatically?

Hi Roy,
I assume you have an ATX Power Supply. You can set this in Control Panel, Power Options, APM Tab, checkmark "Enable Advanced Powermanagement Support" In most cases this is the cure, but on some machines there is no APM Tab in Power Options.

Link to Windows Update Catalog and find "Devices May Not Power Up Properly When Resuming From Standby (Q311542)"
Had the same problem. There WAS no APM tab. (This Soltek 75DRV4 supports it, though.) I tried everything recommended here and several other places (starting with the MSKB articles). Struck right after downloading and installing the XP Critical Updates. I was certainly critical of the updates. I fixed it by formatting and starting over. I'm debating about doing the critical updates again.
Go to Device Manager, then click on View and select 'Show hidden devices'. Check for any disabled entries and then enable them. This should fix your problem.
