in windows xp I ran scan disk.then when my computer restarted the picture is all messed up. Display settings are now resolution 800 by 600 pixels I can not increase it, the color quality is lowest (4 bit) it no longer has the option of 16 or 236. And on the start menu the picture is gone by my user name, and it will not put it back. Can anyone help with this problem?

Sounds like maybe some registry file is messed up. Did you try System Restore ? Sorry, but this sounds so serious, I think you may need to re-install Windows XP again. If XP offers you to try and 'Repair this installation', go with that. Try to save any important files to a CD, or floppies. During installation, keep the same partion and disk format, and use the same Windows folder for the install. Your programs and most data will be untouched, but you will have to re-install some programs, since they will no longer be registered with Windows.
