Please help. Im running WinXP with a 32mb video card and 512mb RAM. I have an Athlon 750 and way to often the cpu is running at 100% even when I have barely any windows open. I check the active processes and most are minor little things like aim and zone alarm. Ive set the paging file to a decent size and have windows set to give priority to foreground applications but it still often runs slow when cpu is 100%; nowhere near what youd expect a 750 with this much memory to run. Any ideas on how to fix this?

well depending on what bios u have, you will need to change a few things to basically tweak yer system

make sure yer cas latency is set to 2 (this doesnt always work with crappy ram)

this is taken from another xp user who had the same prob, this is what i wrote :

...this involves changing bios settings tho, as the high cpu usage is because yer ram has not been configured properly. i had the same prob and this is what helped me to have 0-2% cpu usage on idle.
change yer rams cas latency to 2 (if it doesnt work, then u'll need to clear the cmos to get the machine booting again..and then leave it at cas 3)

make sure dram timing is set to SPD

fast R-W turnaround is enabled

make yer AGP aperture size double to what the MB of yer vid card is..so if you have a 32mb card, make agp aperture size 64..

disable things in the bios you dont need, such as usb if u dont use the ports, or onboard sound or video.

make yer dram clock to whatever mhz yer ram isrunning at..ie 66, 100 or 133mhz

cpu L2 cache ecc checking - disabled
i cant remember anything else at the moment, so please feel free to mail me if this doesnt help

Same Here! And it's driving me nuts. I had it a while back, and fixed it...but that time I was showing TWO explorer.exe's...one turned out to be a virus...since gone...(new system even). I've tried tons to isolate the cause..no luck. VERY annoying.

What did it for you, Dave? Please share!

Thanks...

Parrot
