Hi,
I am having trouble with configuring boot.ini for my system. I have 2 HD (first with 80GB & second with 40GB). I partitioned the 40GB one, and installed Win98SE on one of the partitioned drive, then I installed Win98SE Chinese on the second partition. Finally the hard drive with 80GB i installed Windows XP in it. For some reason Windows XP did not make any change in the boot.ini. I am having trouble booting to my Win98SE or my Cwin98SE. I don't know what i can do to make a boot menu that will let me select the OS that I want.
I tried boot magic 7, and it doesn't work i am not able to install it onto XP and PQBOOT from partition magic doesn't detect FAT32 file system OS when i am run it under XP.
Can someone please help me out with what I can change in my boot.ini?[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect

Thanks for your link fred, but I tried to change some of things in my boot.ini according to the knowledge based in the article. I am still unable to select my OSes.
Let me just make it simpler... "How do we edit the boot.ini to boot 2 Oses from different Hard Drive? If anyone understand my first one it'll be great, if not i hope this one will clarify most of it.
Thanks

Hi again moK,
This is a good example of the (Recovery Console) I was telling you about in our last exchange. On your XP harddrive,
to get the right settings for the boot.ini file and to make sure all of the operating
systems are listed correctly you should probably repair the boot record through the
repair console. You get to the repair console by booting up into the XP Cd and selecting
'R' for repair. Follow these steps once you get to the Repair Console:1) Type FIXBOOT, enter & answer (Y)es to overwrite/create mbr.
2) Type CD \ press enter to get to the root drive.Type and enter these commands one at a time:
3) ATTRIB -H NTLDR
4) ATTRIB -S NTLDR
5) ATTRIB -R NTLDR
6) ATTRIB -H NTDETECT.COM
7) ATTRIB -S NTDETECT.COM
8) ATTRIB -R NTDETECT.COMX is the letter of your CD-Rom drive
9) COPY X:\I386\NTLDR C:\
10) COPY X:\I386\NTLDR C:\Type EXIT to leave the Repair Console and reboot. These steps should repair the mbr
and detect all O/S on the computer.Hope this helps.
Regards

Thanks a lot for your help.
Yes, I know about the repair thingy that you mentioned from my last thread. I finally got my XP installed and now encoutering such a problem. Your detail information for this post will greatly help me out on configuring the boot of my system. I will try it out in a minute and hopefully it'll work.Thanks again smokey :D
I appreciate for all your help :D

smokey,
I tried the steps that you showed me above, but after i reboot, it didn't detect anything. I am still unable to choose from any boot menu. It just boot straight in Windows XP. Is there another way that I can solve this problem?
Thanks again

moK, Does your boot ini entry still look like this?
[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetectyou just need to add the following
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(2)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows 98SE" /fastdetect
Just make a copy of your 'boot ini' first incase you need to restore it.Change the name to (boot ini old). Also it wouldn't hurt to create a restore point.This should at least give you your choices at boot.
The one thing I'm not sure about is, since your second hard disk is partitioned with two copys of 98 on them you might have to change the boot ini file to: 98SE/98SE. Maybe someone else can weigh in on this issue. Regards

If you have Partition Magic installed, you'd better check to see if the other hard drive is even being detected. PQBoot sees FAT32 partitions just fine from my XP NTFS partition. If the other drive shows up, you should be able to just use Partition Magic to change the active partition to the 98 one. Then the computer will boot to that p[artition first, and you can install BootMagic there. If you first copy the boot.ini, ntdetect, and ntldr files from XP to a floppy, you will be able to use that floppy to boot XP if something goes wrong.

Hey smokey,
Well, I formatted the drives again and install win98se onto C:\
then install WINXP onto D:\ and somehow winXP auto configure the dual boot for me.
There was another problem was, that remember i was mentioning about having 2 Windows on 1 harddrive and XP on the other?
The one that i want to install Win98SE and Cwin98SE is a partitioned drive, and i was trying out with the dual boot, but i can't get any furthur after i install my CWIN98SE back onto the partitioned drive. I tried to use partition magic to create the partition but it asked if i want to use a bootable or non-bootable primary partition, and so i chose bootable, but for some reason it's not working XP can't detect the other hidden primary partition. Is there any solution for this? Please help me if anyone knows.Thanks

Hey moK,
This is the part of your boot setup that stumped me, how to boot to the second partition on the second drive. XP is great setting up the boot menu when its installed last.Did you have the partitioned hard drive unpluged the first time you installed XP? It just might of detected both partitions on that second drive.
So as I understand it you have one verison of 98 and one verison of XP. If so remember this, if you try to install your second verison of 98 now it will over write and screw up your verison of XP. XP always gets installed last. Another thing to remember is once a harddrive has the NTFS file system on it, it has to get TOTALLY removed before FAT will install back on that drive.
Since you don't have alot of software installed yet, I think if you were to start over and partition and install both copys of 98 on the FAT drive and then install XP on the NTFS drive, XP would setup a boot menu with both copys of 98 0n it. This is why I think XP is so advanced compaired to 98/ME.
I would of suggested this in the beginning but I assumed you were trying all your stuff on the two copys of 98.
Iv'e never done a triple boot before so if you deceied to do this send me a copy of your boot.ini file entries. I'm curious about how XP will configure it.
Also if you try this, don't forget to make both copys active before you install XP.If you don,t get the choice when your installing the second copy of 98 just install partition magic and make it active with that. Then install XP.
If your tired of installing operating systems and deceied to stick with your duel boot, enjoy it. Regards
