Hello there! I'm in need of help after my last (failed) attempt at installing Linux on my system. I will try to explain it all as accurately as possible...

I have 2 hard disks: one for operating systems and another for data. The one in which I store the OS's has 2 partitions: one for Windows 98 (primary and boot partition) and another for Windows XP (extended).

Then I decided to try and install Slackware 8.1, and I did so by using Partition Magic to delete the Windows 98 partition. I then booted from the Slackware CD and everything seemed pretty much OK until I tried to install LiLo and somehow everything went horribly wrong. It completely refused to install and I had to cancel the installation... and found myselft with an empty MBR and no replacement in sight, i.e. no way to log into Win XP.

I eventually managed to boot Windows XP by using an Emergency Recovery Disk I had created a couple weeks ago, but I just cannot get my computer to boot normally from the hard drive. I just reformatted the former Windows 98 partiton when it became obvious that Linux wasn't going to work for me, but I don't know how to make things get back to their old ways.

I tried installing a copy of Norton System Commander 2000 in C: to see if it helped. It does detect that there is a Windows XP installation in the second partition (well, it calls it Windows 2000, but who cares...), but warns me that some file is missing (surely some boot file that was in C:\ before the "incident") and can't make it launch.

I also tried booting from the Windows XP CD and entering the Recovery Console, but I'm pretty much at a loss when it comes to what the hell should I do once I'm there.

Could any of you guys give me a hand with this?
